Janelle’s Family Home - The Poolhouse Guest Room and Studio

Set within a leafy Mt Eliza property, this self-contained poolside space was reimagined as a multifunctional guest retreat and creative studio. Once dark and open-plan with little architectural character, the brief was to bring warmth, story, and connection — to make it feel like an extension of the main house, yet with a life of its own.

Taking inspiration from English country house libraries and the nostalgic ease of post-war Mornington Peninsula beach shacks, the design balances contrast with comfort. A zesty green palette wraps the walls, carrying through to the bathroom where hand-made terracotta tiles catch the light with gentle irregularity.

The result is layered and intuitive — vintage lighting, well-loved ceramics, and patinated timber pieces mingle effortlessly with pattern and texture. Block-printed lampshades, checks, florals and stripes create a dialogue between heritage and informality.

A modern Australian take on tradition — intimate, characterful, and quietly self-assured.
